The Old Town Bookshop
This is one of the more quaint little second hand bookshops, specialising in old Scottish history books and philosophical reads. No trashy romance novels in sight.
8 Victoria Street, Edinburgh, 0131 225 9237, www.oldtownbookshop.co.uk
With a warren of little rooms piled with dusty old books, this place is perhaps the biggest fire hazard in Edinburgh. And you don't pick the book, the book picks you – usually when it falls on your head.
72 West Port, Edinburgh, 0131 229 5927, open daily 10am–10pm.
Situated just off the green space of the Meadows, this little bookshop makes it easy to combine a winter's stroll with a spot of book scavenging. Be prepared to really rummage though.
1 Hope Park Crescent, Edinburgh, 0131 667 0895, www.tillsbookshop.co.uk, Mon–Fri noon–7.30pm, Sat 11am–6pm, Sun noon–5.30pm.
This shop has a superior range, stretching to children's and illustrated antique books. As well as that mysterious 'miscellaneous' section, for those rogue books that defy categorisation.
3a-4a Haddington Place, Leith Walk, Edinburgh, 0131 556 5897, www.mcnaughtansbookshop.com, Wed–Sat 11am–5pm.
