Isobel Campbell & Mark Lanegan - Picture House, Edinburgh, Sun 15 December
- Miriam Sturdee
- 16 December 2008
The buzz of the near-capacity crowd hushed abruptly as the opening number began, with Campbell's breathy vocals casting the intended spell over the audience. The first half conjured up a Mississippi voodoo-dream sequence with Lanegan cast as darkness in direct contrast to Campbell's angel-like demeanour. His disappearance from the stage midway through 'Saturday's Gone' cast some aspersions as to whether he would indeed return, but return he did after the opening bars of 'Back Burner', which finished to rapturous applause.
Following introductions, they swung straight into an uptempo vibe which continued until the encore, fusing the mood of both halves and playing favourites such as 'Revolver' and a riotous 'Come On Over (Turn Me On)'. Sadly, some of the mood of the music was lost in the cavernous ceiling – a smaller venue may have been better suited – but the duo's popularity now makes this an impossibility. Even so, a perfect end to 2008 for them both, and the release of EP Keep Me In Mind Sweetheart will keep us going over Christmas.
