Gung hei fat choi!

Chinese New Year falls on Sunday 18 February this year, and this time it’s the turn of the Pig (or more properly the Boar). Chinese communities in Edinburgh and Glasgow will be celebrating throughout the week - the two biggest and most spectacular events will take place, as ever, at Glasgow’s Royal Concert Hall and Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre, with teams of musicians and acrobats, and the traditional Lion Dance, but you can also take part in calligraphy and acrobatic workshops and watch street parades. The celebrations culminate in a large-scale performance by the Bejing Opera’s International Monkey King Troupe in Glasgow on 23 and 24 February.

Incidentally, prospective parents may be interested to know that children born in the Year of the Pig are generally honest, straightforward, not that interested in seeking attention, and a little bit shy, much like famous swines Ronald Reagan, Winona Ryder, Elton John and the Dalai Llama.

Various times and venues, Edinburgh and Glasgow. See for complete listings.
