'Coronation Street' star Melanie Hill has confirmed her character Cathy Matthews is not departing the ITV soap anytime soon, after she put pen to paper on a new one-year deal
Melanie Hill has confirmed she is not leaving 'Coronation Street' anytime soon after signing a new contract.
Fans have recently been speculating that the 59-year-old star's time on the ITV soap could be up soon after her character Cathy Matthews revealed she has been trolling Steve and Tracy McDonald (Simon Gregson and Kate Ford), but the former 'Bread' actress has put pen to paper on a new one-year deal to remain on the show.
Speaking about what is next for Cathy, she said: "She leaves The Kabin … Brian and Cathy obviously bought The Kabin but the business is in trouble because everyone has boycotted it.
"Things get quite dark quite quickly. She feels that she wants to protect the people she loves so she decides to move out.
"It’s just how far she goes, that’s the big question. She might not go too far – and I’ve signed another contract for another year, which is brilliant. We’ll see how it plays out."
Melanie is pleased the soap's bosses decided to give the social media storyline to "an older character".
She said: "The 'Coronation Street' community bands together to boycott The Kabin because of what's happened, and it gets really nasty.
"It's interesting they gave this story to an older character, because you would've thought it would be one of the younger ones.
"But it proves how easy it can happen to anybody. Just make a comment without thinking and it's out there on the internet. And it's got a life, and it never goes away."
In real life, the star has a "love-hate" relationship with social media.
She said: "I love and hate it. I came off Facebook about a year ago and I thought I'd miss out at first.
"But I feel so much better, because I don't feel tied to checking in on things all the time.
"I've still got Twitter and Instagram but I don't really use them a lot.
"I usually use them to post skies and nice things. Things that I like looking at.
"I haven't been trolled, but I've seen people get trolled. And it's horrible, toxic, things people write."
But Melanie nearly didn't get the part as the star admitted her audition was a "disaster" after she turned up an hour late and "sweating terribly".She had tried to walk to the 'Corrie' studios from Manchester city centre, but got lost.
Speaking on 'Lorraine', she added: "It was just awful. It wasn't nice."
