Johnny Briggs - who played Mike Baldwin in 'Coronation Street' - is set to be honoured in an ITV special

'Coronation Street' legend Johnny Briggs is to be honoured in a one-off ITV special.

The late actor passed away in February at the age of 85 after a long illness, and the broadcaster is now planning to remember his time on the soap with a look back on the life and times of Mike Baldwin, Johnny's on-screen character for 30 years.

'Johnny Briggs: Coronation Street Legend' will take fans of the long-running soap on a trip down memory lane, as ITV recalls some of Johnny's most memorable storylines.

Stars of the show will also share their personal memories of the actor and the time they spent together on set.

Mike spent 30 years on the cobbles between 1976 and 2006 and remains one of the soap's most iconic characters.

Johnny's exit from the show attracted an audience of 12 million people, as his character died of a heart attack in the arms of his on-screen rival Ken Barlow.

Bill Roache – who plays Ken in 'Coronation Street' – paid a glowing tribute to his former co-star after Johnny's death was announced.

He wrote: "Mike Baldwin and Ken Barlow were arch enemies for many years, but as an actor, Johnny was impeccable, always good, and I was so fortunate to have worked with him for so many years.

"He was a strong character who will be greatly missed.

"I send my love to Johnny on his journey and to all those who are bound to miss him, he was an iconic Coronation Street character. Love you Johnny! X. (sic)"

Johnny's death was announced by his family in February.

They said in a statement at the time: "It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our father, Johnny Briggs.

"He passed away peacefully this morning after a long illness, with family by his side. He was 85.

"We politely ask for privacy at this time, so that we can quietly grieve as a family and remember the wonderful times we had with him. Thank you."
