'The Chase' star Shaun Wallace has revealed he'd love to replace John Humphrys on 'Mastermind'

Shaun Wallace wants to become the first black host of 'Mastermind'.

The 60-year-old barrister – who is best known for starring on 'The Chase' – has revealed he'd love to replace John Humphrys on the iconic quiz show.

Chatting to Simon Gross on 'Get Gossy With Grossy', he said: "If I got to be the host of 'Mastermind', it would be a tremendous honour.

"It would go to show that television looks at diverse talent irrespective of your skin colour, gender or sexuality. And it would give encouragement to people that you can come from nowhere and end up being something if you’ve got the talent."

John, 77, started hosting 'Mastermind' in 2003, but the veteran presenter recently announced plans to quit the show after almost two decades.

He said in a newspaper column last month: "When the present series comes to an end in March there will be someone else in the chair.

"I started 18 years ago – a very long time in the ephemeral world of showbiz. Now, after more than 750 shows, it really is time to finish."

Last year, meanwhile, Shaun called for diversity and culture to be added to the school curriculum.

The 'Chase' star would like to see black history incorporated into school lessons, saying it's important that young people have a "greater understanding" of all citizens of the UK.

He explained: "We do live in a diverse culture.

"One question I was asked the other day was about whether we should incorporate black history and other forms of culture in our curriculum. I say yes, we should have traditional teaching subjects like maths, history and science – but we live in a diverse culture.

"In order for us to have a greater understanding of its citizens, we should have a greater understanding of where they come from in terms of history and culture.

"I think that on the school curriculum, culture should be taught in terms of the citizens they represent and I think that will give a greater respect for the citizens of this country."
