'Hollyoaks' actress Denise Welch - who appeared in 'Corrie' in the late 1990s - admits going back to early wakeups for soap filming was "a shock to the system"
Denise Welch has admitted the early wakeups for 'Hollyoaks' have been "a shock to the system".
The 62-year-old actress has joined the Channel 4 soap as Trish Minniver – the mother of Nikki Sanderson's alter ego Maxine Minniver – and while she's used to the filming schedule from her time in 'Coronation Street', it's still taken some adjusting.
She told Inside Soap magazine: "Being back on a soap and having 5am starts has been a shock to the system, but at least I've done it before.
"And when you get out of bed that early with a spring in your step, you know you've made the right decision."
Denise has some nerves about how fans will "take to her" character.
She explained: "I'm nervous about how people are going to take to her – you always are – because 'Hollyoaks' has such a huge fanbase.
"Although Trish is so multi-faceted and layered, and I'm really excited to see where this goes. I just hope that the audience loves her as much as I do."
The star also recalled her time on the cobbles and insisted despite her more recent projects, her stint as Natalie Barnes – from 1997 to 2000 – remains her most recognisable.
She added: "No matter what else I go on to do, I'll always be referred to as 'former Corrie actress Denise Welch!'
"And my character has just come into the 'Classic Corrie' episodes, which has been great to watch."
Denise recently revealed she and Tom Benedict Knight – who has been cast as her on-screen lover – "bonded quickly" on set, despite the social distancing restrictions amid the coronavirus pandemic.
She said: "I was delighted when I heard it was him.
"We bonded quickly, as much as you can during Covid filming. There’s great chemistry."
