'Celebrity Best Home Cook' judge Mary Berry overviewed contestants' culinary creations with binoculars from a specially-built viewing platform on the show, to ensure her safety amid the coronavirus pandemic
Mary Berry used binoculars to judge contestants from a viewing platform on 'Celebrity Best Home Cook'.
The 85-year-old chef watched on from a specially-built 15ft mezzanine, which was above the kitchen on the BBC show, so she could judge stars' culinary creations from a distance to keep her safe amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Contestant Tom Read Wilson – who is the 'Celebs Go Dating' receptionist – said: "Mary, for the whole thing, because of Covid, was on a kind of beautiful mezzanine that they built for her.
"And they gave her a pair of beautiful opera glasses so she could look over and see what we’re up to, which was just great."
When cooking was complete on the BBC One show – which is due to air later this year – Mary headed down to give her feedback on the dishes.
Tom admitted he enjoyed having the former 'Great British Bake Off' judge looking over the contestants while they were making their dishes.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I couldn’t be happier about her being there."
This comes after Mary admitted she was "immensely proud" to be recognised with a Damehood in the Queen’s Birthday Honours last year.
Mary – who doesn’t use the title professionally – said: "I’m immensely proud. I only had one O-level – well, you could divide that into cooking and dressmaking – so it’s really special for me.
"My parents and my brothers, who are no longer here, would have been chuffed to bits to see me receive it.
"My aim is to make people enjoy cooking as much as I do, and to pass on the skill in a very simple way that I’ve learnt. I love the thought of people cooking at home, and me holding their hand while they do it."
