Natalie Cassidy is set to take a break from 'EastEnders' next year, with her character Sonia Fowler set to be off screen for a few months
Natalie Cassidy is taking a short break from 'EastEnders'.
The 37-year-old star has played nurse Sonia Fowler on the BBC One soap since 1993, but she is expected to have a few months off next year, when she will be off screen from early 2021.
A source explained: "Natalie, like other actors on 'EastEnders', was given a break for a few months.
"In real time she is back filming in the next few weeks but on screen she will leave and be off for a few months because the show is filmed so far ahead."
When Sonia heads off screen early in the new year, 'EastEnders' fans are not expected to see the trumpet-loving character until "early spring".
The source added to The Sun Online: "Giving actors on the show breaks is nothing unusual and when it’s a quieter period for their character, it makes more sense to rest the characters rather than them not doing much on set."
Sonia has had a tough time of it in recent months, dealing with a lot as an NHS nurse during with the coronavirus pandemic, and in 2021 she is set to snap at Jay Brown (Jamie Borthwick) and a patient.
This comes after it was revealed in August that Adam Woodyatt (Ian Beale) will be taking an extended break from Walford.
An 'EastEnders' insider said: "Ian's going to be off-screen as part of a big storyline.
"Bosses are keeping tight-lipped, but it's unclear how long it will be."
Ian is currently fearing for his life after he was left for dead in the Queen Vic.
And despite marrying the love of his life Sharon Beale (Letitia Dean), she is now secretly poisoning him after finding out he locked her son Denny in a room on a boat on the River Thames earlier this year, which eventually led to the youngster's death.
