Lewis Hamilton has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020, after a historic year which saw him become one the world's greatest ever Formula 1 drivers

Lewis Hamilton has been named BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2020.

The Formula 1 racing driver – who recently became one of the most successful drivers in history when he equalled Michael Schumacher's record of seven world titles with his fourth consecutive championship this year – won the coveted title for the second time on Sunday (20.12.20), after being voted by the public.

Speaking during the televised ceremony, he said: "I want to say congratulations to all the incredible nominees. I’m so proud of what they have achieved and I want to say thank you to everyone that has voted for me.

"I wasn't expecting this knowing there's so many great contenders.

"I want to say Merry Christmas to everyone – it's been such an unusual year and I want to mention all the front line workers and all the children round the world, I want you to try and stay positive through this difficult time, I'm sending you all positivity. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

Lewis’ win also comes as he recently surpassed Michael Schumacher’s total of 91 grand prix wins to make him the most decorated driver of all time, and currently has 95 wins to his name.

The racing star was previously named BBC SPOTY in 2014, and was runner-up four times, most recently in 2018 and 2019.

This year, Lewis beat Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson to the number one spot, with the football star finishing in second place, and jockey Hollie Doyle coming third.

Elsewhere, Marcus Rashford was given the Expert Special Panel Award, whilst Captain Sir Tom Moore took home the Helen Rollason-on Award, Liverpool FC were named Team of the Year, and Coach of the Year went to Jurgen Klopp.
