Kate Garraway has received the Inspiration of the Year at HELLO's Star Women Awards, following her husband's battle with coronavirus
Kate Garraway has won the Inspiration of the Year prize at HELLO's Star Women Awards.
The 53-year-old TV presenter – who has kids Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, with her husband Derek Draper – received the accolade for carrying on after her significant other was hospitalised in March after testing positive for coronavirus, and he remains in hospital today battling the effects of Covid-19, despite now being free of the virus.
She told HELLO!: "I don't feel like I'm an inspiration at all. I just feel like I've been trying to get through. If it has been helpful, then that is lovely.
"If you've lost someone due to Covid or you've lost someone for whatever reason, I think Christmas is very tough. I'm lucky that Derek is still with us, and that we still have hope for next year, but it is quite hard to know how to really plan because we have very specific traditions. We would always go to Derek's family on Christmas Eve, we always go to church and I don't think any of that's going to be possible because we need to stay close to Derek in the hospital."
Kate is having to take on the role of both parents to ensure her children enjoy the holiday season without their father.
She continued: "They miss their dad. I'm trying to be mum and dad and obviously can't be. It's sad as well, so it's making sure there's enough laughter going on. You find yourself laughing at the silliest things and it's a relief."
However, the 'Good Morning Britain' presenter is hopeful things will improve and the country will be able to stay positive going into the new year.
She added: "I hope that we, as a country, can fight our way out of this pandemic and we don't give in to bitterness and anger. I just hope we can keep that lovely community spirit we had at the beginning. I hope we can keep some of the good things about 2020 – the positivity and community spirit – and hopefully let's just all let it be over."
