'Good Morning Britain' co-host Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek Draper has been in hospital for nine months, has revealed a coronavirus scare kept her away from the show for a couple of weeks, but she and her children tested negative for Covid-19
Kate Garraway has been absent from 'Good Morning Britain' for a couple of weeks due to a coronavirus scare.
The 53-year-old TV presenter's husband Derek Draper has been in hospital since March after being struck down with Covid-19 – and he is now dealing with the after effects – but the star and the pair's kids, Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11, had two tests recently after her children came into contact with someone who tested positive for coronavirus.
Speaking to co-host Ben Shephard on today's (17.12.20) 'GMB', she said: "It’s lovely to be back, I’m sorry I’ve been absent for a couple of weeks now.
"Well, a few challenges [have been] kicking off, challenges with Derek as there always are.
"So we had, outside of Derek, a little bit of a scare in the sense that we found out the children had come into contact with somebody who, after they came into contact with them, tested positive for coronavirus, [but] isn’t seriously ill.
"It’s happening a lot because of schools, so just to be ultra, ultra, ultra cautious, I kept them at home and kept me at home until we got negative tests.
"We got two negative tests actually, because you know me, more is more. So all three of us had negative tests, mercifully.
"I did think, 'Oh my goodness, this is going to be very difficult, obviously horrific, if any of us get sick.' And I’ve had it. I had it when Derek first had it.
"We're all fine, we're all safe.
"I just wanted to make sure, well, that I kept you safe, Ben, and the crew here safe."
Kate thanked Charlotte Hawkins for filling in for her.
She said: "Thank you to Charlotte. She did a brilliant job. Thank you very much indeed."
Charlotte replied: "I was happy to help out."
Kate also admitted she is finding it "really challenging" trying to work out if she and her kids can see Derek in hospital on Christmas Day (25.12.20).
She explained: "I'm finding it really challenging, really tricky. My dream is for the children and I to see Derek on Christmas Day in some way.
"The practical challenges of that is we have to keep really safe to be able to visit him and isolate.
"Also, there's a question of – if we're doing that can we have my mum and dad there?
"I want to try and avoid, if at all possible, just Darcey, Billy and I on Christmas Day, because that would make Derek's absence feel huge.
"But it's quite a difficult balance to work it all out."
Kate also admitted she is going to have an "amazing Easter" with her in-laws instead of seeing them at Christmas because she doesn't want them to get ill.
She said: "I was almost putting more pressure on them in a way. So I just said, 'Let’s just agree that I don't want the responsibility of you getting sick. You don't want to get sick, no one wants you to get sick.
"'Let’s decide that Derek wouldn't want that either. And let's decide now to have an amazing Easter.' "
