London's young, undiscovered artists are being sought for new TV show Next Big Thing

James Nicholls

The application process is open for the London Live series, which airs in Spring 2021

Aiming to support and showcase London's emerging artists at this difficult time, Next Big Thing is a competition and upcoming TV series, open to entrants ages 17–30, who live, work, or study in the city.

Given the challenges the pandemic has thrown up for those looking to develop their skills or break into the art world, this represents a unique opportunity for fledgling creatives to demonstrate their talent. The winners of Next Big Thing will have their work displayed in a prestigious central London exhibition and promoted to a global audience of buyers and collectors. There will also be a Judges Award and an NBT Bursary.

Young artists are invited to submit images or videos of their existing work in one of the competition's five genre categories: portraiture, photography, street art, sculpture, and landscape.

Ten winners will be selected from across the five categories, while the public will be asked to vote online for their own favourite. The 11 artists will then take part in the TV series over the period of a month, during which they will be asked to create an original piece of work, capturing the spirit of London. The show will air on London Live in spring 2021.

Expert mentorship will be offered to those selected for the show, and a group of renowned artists and arts professionals will be judging the efforts, including BBC Arts presenter Dr James Fox and Chief Curator of the National Portrait Gallery, Alison Smith. Next Big Thing will be presented by London Live's Art Critic and Maddox Gallery Chairman, James Nicholls.

The closing date for applications is midnight on Wed 23 Dec 2020. Details of how to enter and terms and conditions can be found at
