The ceremony celebrating the best new music in Scotland honoured TAAHLIAH, India Rose, Callum Easter and more

Despite lockdowns and a lack of live music, 2020 still managed to be a groundbreaking year for new alternative music in Scotland. To honour some of the talented artists who made waves over the past year, winners of this year's Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) were announced last night in a virtual event broadcast globally on Twitch.

The 2020 SAMA winners were determined following a three-day public ballot which received over 10,000 votes. The biggest winner of the night was artist, producer and DJ TAAHLIAH, who became the first black trans artist to be nominated for a SAMA, as well as the first artist to ever be nominated and win in two different categories in the same year. With foundations in the underground queer dance scene, she took home both the Best Newcomer and Best Electronic awards.

TAAHLIAH said: 'I'm delighted to have won! Especially winning twice. It is a real honour to be the first black trans artist to win, but I know and hope I will not be the last. It means a lot to be recognised so highly, so early on my career as an artist.'

Edinburgh singer-songwriter Callum Easter – whose stunning debut album Here or Nowhere was also shortlisted for the 2020 SAY Award – took home the Best Live Act award at the SAMA.

Other winners included folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Jenny Sturgeon (Best Acoustic), Dundonian rapper India Rose (Best Hip Hop), 'Caledonian metal' band Saor (Best Metal) and Glasgow art funk six-piece Fauves (Best Rock/Alternative).
