The live virtual ceremony on Wed 18 Nov will include performances by Nova and Walt Disco
As we head into the final months of this remarkably strange year, Scotland continues to celebrate the notable new musical talent that has come out of the country in 2020. The Scottish Alternative Music Awards (SAMA) annually showcases the best new acts from Scotland across a wide range of genres. Now in its 11th year, the Scottish Alternative Music Awards ceremony will be hosted online on Wed 18 Nov on live streaming platform Twitch.
Run in partnership with Creative Scotland, Drygate Brewing, Help Musicians, Musicians' Union and more, the SAMAs will be hosted by radio presenter and DJ Jim Gellatly alongside spoken word artist and theatre maker Leyla Josephine. Edinburgh DJ, rapper, producer and recent Scottish Album of the Year Award winner Nova is confirmed to perform live at this year's virtual SAMA ceremony, as well as Walt Disco, a Glasgow quintet that draws influence from the '80s new wave and post-punk.
Jamie Houston, Creative Scotland's Music Officer, said: 'The number of bands and artists to emerge from Scotland every year never fails to astonish. Behind the curtain of the mainstream is a world of talent which demands widespread attention. Thanks to National Lottery players, Creative Scotland is once again able to support the SAMA to celebrate voices and talent from Scotland's burgeoning hip-hop, grime and metal scenes, as well as electronic, indie and pop.'
The nominees on the SAMA shortlist were determined by three specialist nominators for each category including music journalists, radio producers and event promoters. A three day public vote will open on Mon 9 Nov on the SAMA website, with the winners finally announced live at the virtual ceremony on Twitch on Wed 18 Nov.
