The 'new normal' just got a whole lot cuter! Meet lions, snow leopards, bears and more

Five Sisters Zoo is set to reopen its doors to the public on Mon 29 Jun for the first time since lockdown began in March. The non-profit zoo is run by Brian and Shirley Curran, who have been rescuing animals from poor conditions since 2005 and now home over 180 different species of mammals, birds and reptiles from around the world.

Due to recent closure and restrictions, tickets for the zoo must be booked in advance at one-hour intervals. Zoo opening times remain from 10am-6pm daily with last entry permitted at 4pm. In keeping with the government guidelines, a few things have changed at Five Sisters. Social distancing measures have been put in place and visitors are asked to follow the one-way system and other guidelines at all times. The zoo has also implemented a number of hand-sanitising and washing stations around the facility and encourage the public to use these as much as possible.

Though animal encounters, keeper talks, the soft play center and the restaurant will be closed until further notice, there are still plenty of animals — meerkats, cranes, tortoises, and much more -— to see and learn from out in the open this summer. The public need not worry as public toilets are available with a distanced queuing system in place. Food and ice cream kiosks will also be available for takeaway food with contactless payment encouraged.

Speaking of the reopening, Brian and Shirley took to Facebook to say 'We are delighted with the news that we can welcome you all back to the zoo from 29th June. It has been a long road and our fight is not over yet but we wanted to celebrate this good news with you all. Thank you to everyone that has supported us through these last few months, we will be forever grateful.'

Five Sisters Zoo, Polbeth Road, Gavieside, West Lothian opens from 10am on Mon 29 Jun. Tickets are available now.
