Scotland's festival of science fiction, fantasy and horror writing to present a mix of live and pre-recorded talks, workshops and events for its second edition
The UK's only festival dedicated to genre writing, Cymera's digital edition will be going live from Fri 5–Sun 7 June, entertaining viewers at home with over 30 events featuring their favourite sci-fi, fantasy and horror writers. As with many events and festivals which were due to take place this year, Cymera has had to quickly adapt to the new lockdown measures put in place by the COVID-19 outbreak. Following an enthusiastic response from invited writers and season ticket holders, initial plans for a 'taster plate' quickly evolved into a fully-fledged online festival.
Cymera's second edition will feature a mix of live events on Zoom and pre-recorded sessions broadcast on YouTube. The pre-recorded talks will remain online for a week, allowing viewers to experience talks and in-depth discussions about topics in genre writing at their own pace. Sixty-eight authors are slated to make an appearance, including the likes of Chris Brookmyre, Adrian Tchaikovsky, Chris Beckett, Trudi Canavan, M. R. Carey, Tasha Suri, P. M. Freestone, Vicki Jarrett, Olga Wojtas and more.
Alongside author talks, Cymera's programme will also feature six writers' workshops; a quiz on sci-fi, horror and fantasy fiction; Event Horizon, a sci-fi cabaret night by Shoreline of Infinity; live role-playing games; and pre-recorded open mic sessions. All the events will be free to the public, but participants will be asked to donate however much they can, with all proceeds going to the participating authors.
Festival Director Ann Landmann says, 'We were overwhelmed by the support from our authors. Almost everyone was up for running their events online instead. Our audience will be able to spend the whole weekend with us – we even factored in toilet and tea breaks.
'We're excited about bringing our unique programme to a wider audience. While we will miss meeting our speakers and audiences in person, the move to digital opens up some fantastic opportunities. We already have ticket bookings from New Zealand, the USA and the United Arab Emirates.'
Cymera will run from Fri 5–Sun 7 Jun. Programme details are available on their website.
