First wave of acts announced for the eclectic music and arts festival in Stirlingshire

Beloved boutique Scottish festival Doune the Rabbit Hole has announced the first wave of acts for the 2020 festival, set to take place at the Cardross Estate in Port of Menteith from 17–19 July.

Influential Glasgow indie band Belle & Sebastian will headline the festivities on Saturday night, giving fans an opportunity to catch them over the summer. Earlier this year, the band led by Stuart Murdoch released their tenth studio album Days of the Bagnold Summer and launched their new Mediterranean music cruise The Boaty Weekender.

Moscow feminist protest punk rockers Pussy Riot will also headline, a group famous for being convicted under Putin's regime after performing a punk-prayer 'Virgin Mary, please get rid of Putin'. Member Nadya Tolokonnikova served two years in jail, went through a hunger strike protest and formed a punk band in a Siberian penal colony. Pussy Riot's politically-charged music explores topics of gender identity, personal freedom, climate change, transgression, activism and shaping a better world.

Also set to headline are legendary American 1960s soul singers Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, who Rolling Stone magazine named 'Immortal Artists'. The trio is led by Martha alongside her sisters Lois and Delphine. The group got their start as performers as Marvin Gaye's backup singers and eventually became stars in their own right, best known for their hits including 'Nowhere to Run', 'Jimmy Mack', 'Heatwave' and 'Dancing in the Streets'.

'We're delighted to announce Belle & Sebastian, a homegrown, world renowned Scottish band as our Saturday night festival headliner alongside international acts including Russian art activist collective Pussy Riot and US soul legends Martha Reeves and the Vandellas with further exciting headliners to be announced in the new year,' said festival director Jamie Murray.

Other acts confirmed for the 2020 festival include Peat & Diesel, Girl Ray, Cut Capers, The Bluebells, Peatbog Faeries, McLusky, Dry Cleaning, Mickey 9s, Peaness, Esperanza, Wet Look, Tights, Fauves and Kubitaru.

'Doune the Rabbit Hole is very much an inclusive and welcoming family environment and we will continue to accommodate young festival fans and their families and encourage fun, adventure and imagination with children's activities, workshops and fun across the site,' said Murray.

Recognised as one of the most family-friendly festivals in the UK, the festival also features a large kids' area, stories, poetry, jam sessions, yoga classes, and arts and crafts. Returning in 2020 is Douniversity, a series of talks and interactive workshops about music, politics, science, the media and more, which last year included a talk by Kristinn Hrafnsson, the Editor in Chief of WikiLeaks.

Doune the Rabbit Hole is held in partnership with music promoter 432 and aims to increase its capacity to 8,000 people for the 2020 festival. Tickets are available for £110 each for a limited time, while children under 12 can attend for free.
