5 REASONS TO GO SEE
1 He’s a country music legend Dozens of albums, a string of hit singles (he wrote ‘Crazy’, the Patsy Clyne one though not the Gnarls Barkley one, sadly), countless awards, half a century of outsider genius. The 73-year-old hippy country singer songwriter is nothing short of an American icon.
2 He’s a counter-culture legend Nelson’s life has seen him resolutely standing against The Man, whether it’s falling out with labels, supporting wildcard politicians, or whatever. When the IRS handed him a £17m bill, he released an album called The IRS Tapes: Who’ll Buy My Memories? and auctioned off all his possessions, which were bought by mates and given back to him.
3 He’s an environmental legend A lifelong campaigner for the environment, Nelson now owns a company that develops and sells biofuel at truckstops across the States.
4 He’s a reefer-smoking legend Currently the co-chair of NORML (National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws), Nelson allegedly smoked doob on the Whitehouse roof while visiting Jimmy Carter. He was arrested last year when one and a half pounds of hash and a big bag of mushies were found on his tour bus. Oof.
5 He’s an acting legend OK, legend’s maybe stretching it, but he has been in Miami Vice, The Simpsons, King of the Hill and, em, played Uncle Jesse in the Dukes of Hazzard movie. He was in some good films as well, likes.
