Make Me A Christian (3 stars)

Make Me A Christian

Channel 4, Sun 10 Aug, 7pm

While the UK may have been founded on the rock of Christian values, its modern citizens would rather play Pro Evolution Soccer, get paralytically drunk or fritter a week’s earnings away on footwear. But would a return to a more godly way of life help save the nation from its apparently unstoppable decline into the gutter? This series primarily shows just how gigantic a task the bible-botherers have on their hands in convincing some no-nonsense Yorkshire lads and lasses that reading scripture is more important than visiting strippers and Jesus Christ has more to offer than Jimmy Choo.

The volunteers range from a tattooed atheist who disrupts the group with his constant cursing and negativity to a middle class family looking for a way out of their circle of debilitating stress. The opener has the mentors confronting the thorny issue of Leeds-based sin and yet only lasts 50 minutes.

I am very angry at the program 'make me a christian' describing Wicca and paganism as 'serving Satan'! I can't even describe how angry hearing this on t.v made me feel as a Wiccan myself, No one of this religion 'serves Satan' we feel more inclined with nature and believe in the god/goddess. Now I'm happy letting people follow the religion they believe is right for them, but i would never try to convert people as i believe you choose the path thats right for you, but discriminating Wiccans and pagans alike on a public show is not a done thing. You would not hear me going around saying something as nasty about christians. I would like a public apology for that comment.

Emily, from the perspective of Christianity Paganism *is* "serving satan". I'm speaking here as an Religious Studies lecturer and someone with a great deal of experience in Paganism (before converting to Christianity I was a Pagan for 25+ years, and my partner still is a Pagan).

Its not discriminating against Neopagans for a Christian to say, from their perspective, you serve Satan (and to expect them to qualify it in such a relativistic way is unrealistic).

Personally I really like the programme; yes they seem to have chosen people for their "reality TV appeal" (the tattooist is a standard cut-out obnoxious bloke with a chip on his shoulder), but by and large it is refreshing to get religion on TV in an explicit way (instead of the implicit religiosity that we get in the other 99%), and it will be nice to see if they can manage a decent debate on the subject.

Looking forward to next week :)

I appricaite what Reverend George Hargreaves and his helpers are trying to do, but how is giving a crucifix and a picture of the pope and mary to one of the couples going to help them understand the meaning of becoming a born again christian and forgiveness through Jesus Christ?

1) Jesus Christ is no longer on the cross, He is in Heaven at His Fathers right hand so should not be portrayed still on a cross

1 Peter 3:21-22
21and this water symbolizes baptism that now saves you also—not the removal of dirt from the body but the pledge[a] of a good conscience toward God. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand—with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him.

Also while watching the programm It amazed me that I heard from a so called atheist that "if Jesus was there in the hall with them Jesus wouldnt like the crucifix as it has nothing to do with christianity" I say well said atheist!!

2) We shouldnt be looking to the pope or mary thats idolatry look at the commandments

Exodus 20:1-4

1 And God spoke all these words:
2 "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery.

3 "You shall have no other gods before [a] me.

4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below.

The Bible says there's only one way to God and Heaven

John 14:5-7

5(A)Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?"

6Jesus said to him, "I am (B)the way, and (C)the truth, and (D)the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.

Oneness with the Father
7"(E)If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also; from now on you (F)know Him, and have (G)seen Him."

so the only person we need to look to is Jesus Christ Himself :-D
