Pulitzer prize-winning play runs at London's Gielgud Theatre throughout June
The Pulitzer prize-winning play Sweat will transfer to a new home in London's West End this summer. Lynn Nottage's play will run at Gielgud Theatre from June for a limited 50 performances. Tickets for the shows are on sale now.
Playwright Nottage took inspiration for the story from interviews with residents of the rustbelt town of Reading, Pennsylvania, where the play is based. From 2011–2013 Nottage's interviewed residents and discovered the devastating outcome of the city's de-industrialisation where fear, anger and racial tensions begin to rise.
Sweat details the story of once friends pitted against each other by business needs as the American Dream crumbles around them.
Sweat premiered under the direction Lynette Linton at Donmar theatre and will now transfer to the West End's Gielgud Theatre. Tony Award winner Martha Plimpton will play lead character Tracey, as per the original production. Further casting is yet to be announced.
Sweat runs at the Gielgud Theatre in London's West End from Fri 7 June. Tickets are on sale now.
