Take a ghastly trip through Edinburgh's darkest history
The Edinburgh Dungeon – purveyors of ghoulish frights and blood-curdling entertainment – have announced a brand-new month of activities and an exclusive Halloween show in celebration of the spooky season. From 6 October to 4 November, Edinburgh Dungeon will become the 'Home of Halloween', and will feature a host of deadly fun events, such as Halloween make-up sessions at Harvey Nichols' M.A.C. counter and a coffin competition with partnered hotels.
One lucky couple has also won the chance to take part in the Dungeon's exclusive Coffin Sleepover on 27 October, putting their relationship and their mettle to the ultimate test as they spend 12 hours in the dreaded Torture Chamber. After being read a night-time story by one of the Dungeon actors and tucked into their cosy, custom-built coffins, a night camera will film their peaceful slumber … and the frights that will emerge from the shadows after-hours.
At the heart of the celebrations is Edinburgh Dungeon's new show SEANCE – IS ANYBODY THERE? Visitors will be taken on a ghastly trip through Edinburgh's darkest history, and learn about the tragic fate of Madgy Docherty, the final victim of the notorious anatomy murderers Burke and Hare, who slew unsuspecting citizens in order to sell their bodies as specimens to medical schools. Madge was killed on Halloween night in 1828, the last of their 16 murders. Eight years after her death, a collection of miniature coffins containing tiny wooden dolls were discovered on Arthur's Seat. No one has been able to discern their true purpose, though the theory has been floated that they were an attempt to give the poor souls of Burke and Hare's victims a final resting place.
At the SEANCE show, visitors will attempt to connect with Madgy Docherty from across the veil, and hear what secrets she might have to reveal before she can cross over to the other side …
SEANCE – IS ANYBODY THERE?, Edinburgh Dungeon, Sat 6 Oct–Sun 4 Nov. Tickets available now.
