'Venom' star Tom Hardy has defended the comic book movie's PG-13 rating in the US, and insisted it still gives them room to delve into the darker side of the source material

Tom Hardy has defended 'Venom' over its rating and insisted it hasn't harmed the movie's interpretation.

The 40-year-old actor has opened up on the film's certification - 15 in the UK and PG-13 in the US - and explained how it was able to find a wider audience while still being able to explore the darker side of the source material.

He told MTV International: "Is it going to be R-Rated? That's the big question and the answers been answered, isn't it? [It's a 15 in the UK] and it's a PG-13 in the states, but to be fair the thing can fulcrum into R-Rated and fulcrum into youth or children.

"My littlest ones, they watch Spider-Man and Venom quite comfortably and Venom toys appear and LEGO appear.

"So it's not like they're scared by him, and at the same time there's a lot in the real estate that you can actually imbue with a complete sense of gratuitous violence if you really wanted to, and I think you've got the right people for that job if you want to push it, course that's where I want to go with it."

While Hardy himself might be keen on pushing 'Venom' even further on the big screen, he recently admitted he turned to his 10-year-old son Louis for advice on how to play Eddie Brock and his anti-hero alter ego.

He confessed: "I'm not going to lie, I just thought he was a black Spider-Man. I didn't really read comic books, so my information was limited.

"But I was given loads of comics when I got involved. All the comics! And more importantly, I had my son as my guide ... I was versed in the way of Venom by a 10-year-old. I consulted the oracle, there. And he would steer me on."

The 'Legend' actor will be playing Eddie Brock and his alter ego on at least two more occasions if his upcoming film is a box-office success.

Eddie (Hardy) is a reporter trying to expose the nefarious activities of dodgy billionaire Carlton Blake (Ahmed) when he’s grabbed by an alien symbiote that gives him powers. Flailing about between genres, this never finds its tone and Hardy turns in a bizarrely shifty performance. A muddle.
