Young creative talent host an after-hours celebration with performances from Be Charlotte and West Princes
Throughout its storied past, Edinburgh Castle has played host to royalty and celebrities, enemy invaders and ne'er-do-wells alike. This October, however, this famous monument will be seen in a new light altogether, as a party unlike any other in its long history bathes its fortifications in neon hues.
Knight at the Castle will be an 18-and-older after-hours celebration of young Scottish creative talent. Taking place on 5 October, the castle's esplanade will be transformed into a carnivalesque festival, with five differently-lit zones that will each feature individual activities like a neon salon, photo booth and a make-your-own neon crown workshop, alongside many more activities and surprises.
Musical acts will bookend the evening, with Glasgow-based indie quartet West Princes kicking things off and Dundee pop artist Be Charlotte bringing the festivities to a close. Alongside a host of live entertainment from DJs and roving performers throughout the night, visitors can also view the many treasures that are housed in the castle outside its opening hours, such as the Crown Jewels and the Great Hall.
The event is supported by EventScotland, as part of their Year of Young People 2018 event fund. A key event in this hallmark year, young people have played a vital role in shaping it, from its line-up to its aesthetics. A group of students from Edinburgh Napier University designed the neon lighting scheme and ticket pricing, ensuring that it remained as accessible as possible for 16–26 year-olds. There will also be a targeted ticket giveaway to provide opportunities for young people to attend who otherwise might not have been able to do so.
In addition to curating the evening's entertainment, The List is also launching a competition for a young act to win the chance to perform a set at the event, with the winner to be judged and selected by a youth advisory group. So whatever your trade – whether you're a singer-songwriter, a spoken word artist or a comedian – if you're aged between 18 and 26, we want to hear from you. All you have to do is send a 30 second video telling us who you are, what your act is and what inspires you about performing at this unique venue to firstname.lastname@example.org no later than 12 July 2018.
