Into the Wild (Senior Screening)
Date Location
Robust yet freewheeling adaptation of John Krakauer's non-fiction book about the extraordinary experiences of young American college graduate and society dropout Christopher McCandless (Hirsch), who traded his privileged future for a life on the road. Penn's portrait of McCandless' travels is a poetic and romanticised one, beautifully photographed by French cinematographer Eric Gautier and unspooling as a series of largely life-affirming encounters with nature and fellow travellers.

Jumper
Date Location
Mildly interesting adaptation of Steven Gould's hit sci-fi books about people called 'jumpers' who can transport themselves through time and space. Liman ('Mr and Mrs Smith', 'Swingers') directs with his usual admirable energy. Christensen proves that there is life after 'Star Wars' in the lead with good support from Jackson and Jamie Bell.

North By Northwest
Date Location
Quintessential Hitchcock comedy-actioner with Grant perfect as the everyday adman pitched into a freewheeling espionage adventure, in which nobody believes his innocence but he finds self-worth and romance along the way. Classic sequences abound, including the crop-dusting routine and the Mount Rushmore climax. Brilliant entertainment.

Bloody historical epic based on Frank Miller's comic. This is a full on narrative assault on the senses - the 'Sin City'-ish visuals only add to the thrill of it all.
