Proper good ol' US of A food is hard to find in Glasgow so new restaurant Brooklyn deserves attention for dishing up an oft-overlooked cuisine that's tricky to find and hard to sustain in these parts, opening as it does on the old Ad Lib site. Brooklyn doesn't overdo the Americana – the odd picture here, pinball machine there – in what's a pleasant space, if a bit higgledy due to its former use as a fire station. The menu concentrates on the American classics, and avoids straying too far south into Tex-Mex territory, with the likes of corn dogs, chowder, NY strip steaks and other beef cuts, pastrami on rye, campfire beans, and hickory ribs. An American-style grill needs a stunning burger, but Brooklyn's is rather disappointing – the patty is tasty enough but dry and too dense, dwarfed by a fragile bun that penalises manhandling. Much better is the Cajun-style jambalaya, with prawns and rice infused with the deep savoury flavours of chorizo. Portions are big (not US-style big, of course) and the prices are reasonable, but they can add up, with a side of slaw being about two mouthfuls for an extra £1. Interesting drinks on offer include the tasty Brooklyn lager and several US wines. Watch our for the occasional Eat All You Can style nights to sample that truly American dining experience.
