Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Sixty-five years since its first appearance and half a dozen venues later, Indian stalwart Khushi’s has popped up on Antigua Street near the top of Leith Walk. Behind its extensive glazed frontage waiters bustle between a separate raised area reserved for larger parties and the stylish main dining room of powder blue walls, sari inspired graphics and ornate coloured lanterns. Currently eat-in only, the no-charge BYOB supports a good value lunch deal and a familiar evening menu of chicken and lamb classics, tandoori and seafood curries. Cooling mint chutney complements seasoned cubes of pepper monkfish tikka alongside popular lamb rogan josh served on the bone in fennel-infused gravy. Creamy, tomato-rich fish karahi curry has flavour depth, while heavily battered chilli squid and 24-hour cooked Punjabi favourite dal makhani (black lentils) are disappointingly one dimensional. Pakora, samosa and tikka starters are book-ended by home-made sorbet and ice creams, with a good range of smoothies and sweet or salted lassis. A lively atmosphere and contemporary setting go someway to compensate for dishes that can fail to shine.

  • High point: Stylish interior and convivial ambience
  • Low point: Bland black lentil side dish

Reviews of Khushi's (10 Antigua Street, Edinburgh)

1. curry connaisseur, city centre – 7 January 2012, 11:22am1 starKhushi'sReport

People often define kushi as one of Edinburgh's stalwart. but that was in the 1947..may be at the time people like sheep stew known as mutton curry or lamb kushis, so they got away with it. My visit at potterow one was not a very good one..the victoria strret one was classy with arrogant management and a carefree attitude. kushi diner had so many bad reviews than I dont feel like leaving one..
when my friend phoned for a table for 4...they were told that they were fully booked and giving it the big pretence but then finally give us a table...entering the restaurant...I thought the decoration was quite dull and lighting was harsh. have been there a few times when it was massimo..and there decor was much better..
we went there quite early and there was another table already in..the manager came to take us to our table...no smile or anything....I did recognise him from victoria street and his wife...we knew we did not have much time to eat and vacate the place...the place started to fill up with christmas party groups...
the food was just the same as before..bland and tasteless..its just not home cooking at all..our garlic naan hardly had any garlic on it and was not even fluffy. so we ordered another and the one came cold and brick hard...or just may be too crispy...just tasted some of the dishes from my friend.....another table were complaining to the manager that they were missing a dish and the naan bread that finally arrived was warm. which the manager tried to dish them off by explaining that the chef is new and they are just getting adjusted. we ate our food silently and only glare at each other to pass on the dish which was small in comparison to other restaurant..the price is reasonable but the portions are very small which makes it overpriced....did they forget to buy larger dishes or its another way to con people..it was more tapas size dishes...
the table next to us got the food for half price with the manager/owner being furious at the complaining customers. he went on to shout at his chef in the kitchen....
All in all we tried kushis because we felt it jovial and we had to head to the theatre across the road...the food is progressing though from sheep stew to bland curry...a step up!!!
BYOB policy is a good thing which makes the bill not that sour...
We understand that its newly open so there would be lots of problems at the start...
we ate and left quickly so that we would not be forced out..
good luck!!! and hope they do well but unless they have better to offer I cant say that ill be back soon.
