Tell us more about this place.

Looking upon this humble house today, it is inspiring to reflect that this was the birthplace of one of Britain's most influential thinkers. Thomas Carlyle was born here in 1795, and went on to become a great writer and historian, as well as one of the leading voices on 19th-century morals and social equality.

The interior of the house is furnished to reflect domestic life at Carlyle's time and contains a fascinating collection of portraits and Carlyle's personal belongings.
