The southern section of the Covenanters Prison is marked by a plaque in Greyfriar’s Churchyard. The covenanters were those people who signed the National Covenant in 1638, which voiced opposition to the interference of the monarchy in church matters. Over 4000 men were imprisoned, many of whom died of starvation or exposure.
