The New Masala Pot
- Typical order: Assamese Chilli Garlic Chicken (£6.50)
The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
Hidden behind a bus stop next to an electricity sub-station, The New Masala Pot’s exterior can be a little off-putting on first visit, and the slightly jaded, two-tone curry-coloured interior doesn’t help. Making the leap to eat from here can be quite an effort, yet those who make that effort can be well rewarded. The food here covers everything you would expect from an Indian takeaway, from traditional meat and sauce curries (from mild Kurma, through Bhuna and Madras, to super-hot Vindaloo) as well as tandoori, seafood, vegetarian and ‘exotic’ specialities. Portions are large and filling and prices are on the lower side for Indian takeaway so this place is never really quiet, which ensures a fast turnover of fresh ingredients. Watch out though, most dishes seem hotter here than elsewhere, so order down a notch from usual, unless you’re a chilli lover.
