Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

Totally refurbished after a fire, the Peacock Inn plays on its proximity to Newhaven harbour and its long-lost fishing heritage. The humble fishing folk in the vintage black and white portraits adorning the walls would be impressed by the tasteful surroundings, although they might puzzle at chairs that seem too low for the tables. If they ordered the whitebait, they might enjoy a crisp clutch of the little fish with a good vinegary dip. The mussels in white wine and cream would not please however, wholly over-powered by a blast of raw onion. The self-proclaimed ‘famous’ beer-battered haddock is a reasonable attempt. A ‘horseshoe’ gammon steak is frankly too salty by half. Other main course options include pub grub favourites such as steak and ale pie, macaroni cheese, and bangers and mash. A daily ‘blackboard special’ is usually available. Sweet things include a leaden pistachio panacotta with over-sweet sauce, as well as homely options like sponge or rice puddings. New management and a change of chef are on their way. All for the better, contemporary Newhaven locals might say.

  • High point: Pleasing on the eye
  • Low point: Less so on the palate

The Best Fish and Chips in Town. This place is warm and friendly, we had the angel which was the medium sized fish, which was more than filling, the children had the tiddler as recommended by the waitress. The service was very good, the home made desserts just melted in my mouth. I would recommend this place to all the good people of Edinburgh. Fine Dinning at a reasonable price.

We ate here tonight and were so disappointed.
Only good thing we can say is the decor is nice.
We (4 adults) ordered 3 x Small Fish and chips having been told the portions are big and 1 smoked haddock. Fifty minutes later four very small portions arrived . The chips were inedible, clearly made with rotten black potatoes fit only for bin. The chef agreed they should not have been served. The smoked haddock was nice but would have been alright as a started but NOT for a main course it was a child portion.
We complained and £6 was deducted from the bill for the three lots of chips.
Do not intend ever going back and we plan on letting our friend know
