Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Though the lightly spiced, smooth, buttery dhal is delicious, there’s no denying you come to the Khyber to eat meat. Welcome, then, is the special kebab starter with the chance to sample each of the meats on offer. Marinated lamb mince sheek kebab is full of fresh spices, chicken tikka is moist and tangy, but the winner is the succulent boti lamb kebab; tender chunks of lamb marinated in spices and nicely charred from oven roasting, all served with a fresh, crunchy salad and cooling mint sauce. Some less well known Afghani dishes are on offer for main course. Kabli pilau is a wonderfully sweet and aromatic rice dish, laden with raisins, carrot and chunks of lamb. ‘Dum pukht’ style, meaning slow oven, lamb with vegetables slips wonderfully off the bone and a gigantic soft naan bread with crispy bubbles proves the perfect tool to mop up the dark, sweet and spicy gravy. Subdued by all that meat, a cup of sweet Afghani kehwa green tea perks you up wonderfully at the end of the meal.

  • High point: Melt in the mouth lamb, lamb, lamb
  • Low point: White walls and cold blue lighting

The Khyber is my last stop after I finish with my cash n carry in glasgow the karahis r tasty as always but tried the dum pukht this time an amazing no oil dish of big lamb pieces cooked with vegetables really tasty their Kabli pulao and dhal has improved in terms of balance spice n taste too which my wife orders always. The new lighting has made the restaurant bright, 2 cups of kehwa at the end digest even if I eat stones lolllls

Decided to try the Khyber as it is fairly local to us and wanted to try Afghani food.

The décor is very sparse but don't be too put off by this. The lamb Peshawari Carahi was very spicy but delicious and sweet, the meat was perfectly cooked. The naan breads huge and equally good.

The only minus is this is food to blow your brains out spicy. After four spoons of dall my lips were numb and leaving my face in search of cooler climes.

Overall very reasonably priced, byob with no corkage but ask them to hold off on the chilli a bit!

Would eat here again.
