Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the 2011 edition.

Mansion House is the latest superclub to be unveiled in the Merchant City. Previously Tiger Tiger, it is compartmentalised into various rooms and venues, all with a different vibe but squarely aimed at revellers having a fun-filled evening. Through Merchants and Jewel, the ground-floor bars sitting above Jongleurs’ basement venue, and up the stairs beyond the 1980s disco and the tiki-themed bar and the karaoke rooms, you finally reach the Glasserie - the place to head for bistro rather than bar food. With huge picture windows, large artworks and a guitarist strumming away, its an attractive space that fills up on the limited weekend opening with many diners enjoying meal deals combining comedy gigs downstairs. Starters of smoked salmon and haggis dumplings arriving on slate plates - fun and pretty for diners but tricky for the staff. Mains focus on reliable bar favourites, plus a few treats such as a lobster and sirloin surf n turf, while upping the presentation - a tasty Thai green curry comes in a half coconut, and a well-cooked steak on slate comes with chips in a mini metal bucket on the side.

  • High point: Fun dining in deepest Merchant City
  • Low point: Menu not the most exciting
