It was one of the mysteries of the age; why didn’t Hyndland boast a decent restaurant? After all, this fragrant area of Glasgow’s West End was scarcely short of disposable income. Then, like buses, two came along in quick succession, both run by Lawrence McManus, owner of Café Antipasti on Byres Road. The Italian Nick's came first, then Epicure’s, the more upscale of the two, with a coffee shop drop-in centre as you enter and a sit-down restaurant at the rear, up a small flight of stairs, thus affording a Jackie Bird’s-eye view of the cashmered lunching ladies nearer to ground level. With such a substantial volume of traffic the place needs judicious staffing and it has it; Epicure’s is an act calibrated adeptly to its clientele, adjusting with fluidity to its needs throughout the day. Accordingly, the menu is broad and familiar; steaks, burgers, big breakfasts and similar. The eggs Benedict were a cut above and from the à la carte menu sea bass on a lemon and thyme risotto summarised the ethos of this informal yet discerning establishment.

Epicures of HyndlandReport -
Having visited on a Sunday I felt it necessary to post a review in regards to the service & attitude display by a particular waitress. Having sat outside for lunch we waited a little over 5minutes to be given a menu & ordered a coffee & water. Another 10mins passed & our drinks came. Immediately we ordered soup, sandwich & a mackerel salad - quick & easy?. As time began to pass people who had arriving after us were tucking into their grub as we sat starving. The waitress, who by now had stopped coming outside appeared 25mins later to say food shouldnt be long kitchen was busy - again we were waiting on soup, sandwich & salad. Finally at an impressive 35mins after ordering, our food came and so did the rain! We asked to be seated inside, there was no seats, fair enough not her fault but we said we cant eat in the rain, and to be honest 35mins, busy or not, was a ridiculous time to wait for soup & salad. To which the waitress became flustered and in an alarming tone and attitude said 'Right ... ok' and walked away from us with the food!! As she hop stepped away like a huffy 12yr old my fiance asked for the drinks bill which we got a 'its fine' as she scurried away with her back to us! The whole situation was remarkable and somewhat embarrassing, her tone was shocking. I have never experienced such a response from a waitress - thank god! Whilst we acknowledged with here there was nothing to be done about there being no indoor seating, there was no apology made for the fact our food - which to be honest doesnt take much prep - took 35mins to arrive, that people sitting inside were tucking into their food despite arriving well after us and . We both walked away in dismay having had an adult act like a child and turn their back on us and walk away. Its sad because I normally enjoy Epicures but I will never return after this display of 'customer service' and I will certainly be telling my friends who also frequent Epicures of this terrible service. This one waitress has effectively ruined my opinion of this establishment and I will no longer recommend it to people. From previous reviews it seems I might not be the only person to received the wrath of Epicures Service!! Shame

Very uncomfortable seating and its a noisey place with clanging and banging, not relaxing at all. Food is average and there seems to be a problem with flies, especially upstairs, which is a bit of a health issue. Plates are disgarded when you go for a more expensive dish and you end up with a block of wood instead of a plate, which feels like eating off the table. It tries to be the in place, but it is not.The service is not good

Very disappointed with the inconsistency of the food, service and prices. I have eaten in on several occassions for lunch and dinner. The food has been great at times and really poor at others. The waiting staff seemed super keen and attentive when they first opened, but the standards seem to have slipped since then. One waiter really stands out as being very helpful and pleasant. Don't know his name but he's young with dark hair and glasses. I buy a lot of take out food as I work nearby and the sandwiches started off with lots of nice salad, food quantity of filling and lovely bread. However, the last 3 or 4 sandwiches have been devoid of any salad and its more like a slap dash 2 pieces of bread with a sliver of filling inside. Also when buying take away cakes there is such a huge disparity in pricing. I once bought a scone to take out and was charged over £3 for it. This is incredible considering most other quality cafes such as Delizique only charge 85p. I have very mixed feelings about the place.

Went to Epicures with a friend last night. The waitress who brought the menus was surly, but thankfully her colleague who took over was friendlier. The service however was very poor indeed. The starters were delivered in reasonable time but we waited an eternity for the main courses - how long does it take to cook a burger ? When it eventually appeared no apology was offered so I can only assume that's the norm. Nor did they have the excuse of being particularly busy. The food was fine apart from somewhat soggy chips. Nice enough ambience, but won't be rushing back.

I'm always looking for somewhere nice to go and have a coffee, read the paper and take in my surroundings and I think I may have found my new favourite place.
The first thing I noticed when I walked in the door was the welcome. It was lovely to be greeted as I walked in and shown to a table. The staff were all so friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves which I find is always a good sign. On this particular day I had 4 (!) different flavours of scones to choose from so I settled with a treacle and a flat white (with the fern on top to boot!). People watching in the West End is fun enough as it is, but I particularly like it in here as its lovely to watch the waiting staff- and even some chefs- interact with people who are clearly regulars.
They are obviously a busy place and I think with such a demand for tables they do a fantastic job. I will definately be back to try some of their lunch and dinner offerings as all the food I saw looked very tasty.
Thanks for a very pleasant experience.

I was up in Glasgow catching up with a friend. She suggested a new place called Epicures.
The food was reasonable although a little overpriced.
The service was terrible.
My friend is a slow eater and was asked three times if she was finished even the she still had cutlery in hand.
As soon as the food went the bill had arrived and even though we were still drinking an older person, who appeared to be the manager, came over and told us that she "needed the table".
I would never recommend a place that hurries it's customers rudely out the door. Especially in the west end where competition for the "coffee and fancy cake" pound is fierce due to the many choices.
Go to Kember and Jones, Delizique, Two figs or jelly hill instead. avoid this place!
