If the Eating & Drinking Guide had a 'one to watch' category then Captain Taylor’s would undoubtedly be in there. Opened in August 2010, this is a side project from the incredible minds behind long-standing homeless charity Streetwork. Essentially set up with the long-term goal of using the space downstairs (as yet lying dormant) as a social enterprise, there is much to admire in this reasonably priced cafe. While its high windowed exterior belies little space to really hangout inside, this is clearly a work in progress. When finished, downstairs will be complete with comfy sofas, and in the meantime passers-by can enjoy some very fine coffee courtesy of Broughton Street’s Artisan Roast (at just £1.75 a cup) and sandwiches (Caesar salad and turkey and cranberry among them) from Jane Street’s Galway Gourmet. A slab of their Malteser or crispie cake along with a cup of their finest can be picked up for a barely there £2.70. Better still, all profits from the enterprise go straight to the charity. Watch this space.
