Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

From the people behind the ever-popular Khushi’s comes a more glamorous taste of India that freely announces its ambition to fit right in with the neighbouring Michelin-starred restaurants of The Shore. Carefully arranged low lighting and classy dark wood are offset by splashes of colour in fabrics and candles, and large tables or booths ensure plenty of space and privacy. Various tasting menus showcase what’s available; otherwise the list of options is divided into starters, mains and curries, with sides and daily changing naan bread. A complementary amuse-bouche of ‘Indian-style tomato soup’ gives an indication of the incredible spice blends to come. These fragrant earthy flavors complement venison in kebabs stuffed with tomato chutney, and come out in full force in the home-style lamb curry. Duck, slow roast in the tandoori oven, is almost caramelized with its ginger and cardamom marinade, matched with a pomegranate raita. There are also a number of interesting seafood dishes, notably the sigri grouper, roasted with a peanut sauce. Desserts are less exciting, although home-made sorbets are not to be overlooked for a refreshing finish. Raising the bar of Indian food in the capital, this fine dining comes at a price; at the same time, Mithas is unlicensed and BYOB is available with no corkage for wine.

  • High point: The most glamorous Indian restaurant in town has food to match
  • Low point: It's in a different price league to any other Indian in town

Reviews of Mithas (7 Dock Place, Edinburgh)

“Another fantastic evening at Mithas.” this was my 3rd visit to Mithas in two months and i'm still to be disappointed.

We had a great evening with a fantastic food and service. My colleagues who visited for the first time was in love with the place from the tasty starter to the even better main course from tasting menu.

They are both used to fine dinning and and good wine so i was a bit nervous since we were there on my recommendation but i'm sure they'll both be going back next time they're in edinburgh.

I'd recommend Mithas a fine dining indian restaurant to anyone going to edinburgh.

Fabulous food. Not the standard Indian restaurant stuff (which I quite like but is rather heavy and too much ghee). Here were small portions of exquisitely prepared food, esp interesting and unusual fish (bream, bass, as well as salmon). Smooth unobtrusive service, but friendly too. Pleasant harmonious decor. Great! and reasonably priced. Bring your own booze, so the bill is pleasantly mild.

Having eaten at a fair number of indian restaurants there is no doubt that Mithas aspires to be a cut above the pack. Largely it succeeds; wonderful setting and atmosphere, attentive staff, it certainly gives the feeling of fine dining. We started with some of their kebabs which are marketed as "tapas". Beautifully cooked with innovative spices and seasoning they were definitely a treat for the taste buds. Then followed the main courses which again were well cooked and full of flavour. But would I go back? Probably not.
While wonderful the kebabs would have to be at £7 for two large chunks of meat, working out at £1.75 a mouthful they were at the edge of over priced. Wehad two each. The main course went beyond that edge. £13 for a curry was excessive. It was good but I've had better for less than £10. And then we come to the rice. I'm sorry but for £5 I was expecting to be spoon fed it by the waiting staff, instead it was a bog-standard pilau which would cost half as much anywhere else. Add £3 for a small bottle of coke and, including tip you were looking at £40. Don't get me wrong it was good, it just wasn't £40 good. They are obviously looking to corral the up market curry clientelle, I'm just not sure it's a big enough market to keep them going.

What a treat! Popped in here on a whim and decided to go for the vegetarian banquet. It was amazing and really different and refreshing in comparison to standard Indian menu options. The food was imaginative, freshly prepared and beautifully presented.
Make sure you arrive hungry too as, although the dishes are tapas sized, they keep on coming! My favourites were a spiced mushroom and chestnut dish and an apricot biryani curry that had been slow cooked.
The staff were really attentive and eager to please and each dish was announced and explained with a real sense of pride.
It was really quiet when I went last night but I'm sure it will get as busy as the other nearby eateries as soon as word gets round.

Wow! What a great place - sophisticated, well designed with friendly and efficient staff. This brand new restaurant is more upmarket than previous Khushi's, with a focus on fresh, beautifully flavoured seafood and curries. Subtle decor and a great atmosphere. You can get drinks from the bar next door. Great for that special occasion.

This new addition to the Khushi family of restaurants is amazing. The food was absolutely to die for, I myself am not a fish lover but i can highly reccommend the Sea Bass, it was delicious as was the rest of the meal, Tarragon Chicken was equally as delicious and the decor is understated yet beautiful at the same time. I also loved the wall paintings showing the story of Khushi's as you head to the toilets. I cant wait to go back.
