Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Mrs Forman's Inn may have been established in 1822 on the edge of Musselburgh’s Golf Course (officially recognised as the oldest golf course in the world) but the latest management team have only just taken the reigns. The menu at this husband and wife operation is built around the fresh produce delivered from local suppliers. Begin with a tasty starter of haggis and Belhaven smoked cheese with red onion jam or opt for a main of grilled sea bass served with mussels and a light parsley and garlic butter sauce. Meat lovers can get their teeth into the house steak, succulent striploin in three sizes to suit all appetites, and although the choice for vegetarians is limited the dishes on offer are well executed. Desserts such as crème brûlee and sticky toffee pudding also impress. All dishes served are of a high quality and this destination attracts a sophisticated crowd of locals and golf tourists who regularly book the place up on Friday and Saturday nights.

  • High point: Enjoy dishes in the large beer garden in summer
  • Low point: Perched on the corner of a roundabout

My partner and I decided to try Mrs Forman's after reading an advert to say it was under new management. We decided to go early evening as we had our one year old with us and we were provided with a high chair. We had the two course menu which as under £12 and the food was amazing. We were so full that we didn't manage dessert. There was no problem with having a child with us and the staff were welcoming and friendly.

Perhaps the best food in Musselburgh. Not only were the staff friendlier than most in town, the food beats any within a five mile radius. I went for the first time today and had the most amazing black pudding I could imagine. Also, the price was more than reasonable (both for food and drink). The lunch deal particularly was a great value. A visit here is worth repeated trips to Musselburgh.

A big dissapointment ! after reading about the new Mrs Foremans in the local courier promising Breakfasts , lunches and dinners was so dissapointed that when it did open they only served lunch and dinner and no childrens menu , The owners are so rude and show this by making you feel uneasy having just a drink ! we went there and had a drink a couple came in and the owner was faffing up and down worrying about a large party arriving at 8pm in the evening , he was moving chairs etc by the way this was 12 in the afternoon , the couple that had came in said oh do you want us to move or leave, god terrible service . We revied this place a while ago and he realised who we were and basically came over and said oh didnt think you would be back after your review well really dont you think he should have bent over backwards to make or evening great but no he complained like a petty little boy because we had freedom of speech , please avoid this at all costs its not what you would expect , they like to be nice to foreign people and english people but normal scotts and working class beware , not a good time , better trying the levenhall arms next door for a lovely experience great food and atmosphere and you arent chased out the door
