The coffee is addictive, as are the exhibitions.
The first time I was there, I went up to the exhibition and was lucky enough to be introduced to the work of Ed Slater. http://www.edslater.co.uk/
Current Exhibition "Frae Muckle Coos tae Cowpit Yowes", by Sorn artist Elaine Johnson. On until 19th March 2011.

This is apparently a new venue for this part of Scotland. The welcome was warm, everyone seemed very friendly. The retail space was small and nicely laid out, but not very well lit. The arts and crafts on sale were lovely, but the range seemed quite limited (jewellery, textiles and some pottery - no wood, metal work, glass etc) which was disappointing. The food and coffees in the cafe were of good quality, but seemed overpriced for this area of Scotland - I would expect to pay this much for a coffee in London! The upstairs display area was showing an exhibition of local artists work, but no-one had bothered to put the lights on (it was 3pm!) and so the gloomy light did nothing to enhance the work. Which was a shame.
In summary, this could be a lovely venue, and the people were great, but there's alot of work to do for things to live up to their potential.

Opened in November, on the A76 Castle Street of Sanquhar a few yards from the Tollbooth and it will take time to iron out the kinks but WOW, loved it.
Warm friendly atmosphere as soon as you enter the building. Arts and crafts by local artists and the cafe fits in beautifully (coffee is the new black).Local children's artistry adorns the stairway walls on the way to two art/craft studios on the 1st floor and a theatre/cinema/danceroom on the 2nd.
Some great acts lined up for the 2nd floor, so keep an eye on this venue.Well done Sanquhar!
