Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

The peeling wallpaper, plain wood and 1970s style cushions on the booth benches are all deliberate: for all Lucky 7 looks like a dodgy old bedsit, it's actually carefully contrived to give this city centre hangout a laid-back, studenty atmosphere. This is not a place to show off designer togs; the emphasis is more on conversation going on into the night – and food. The original idea of all mains costing £7 has been scaled back, but there are still a range of both meat and veggie selections at that price, with some more ambitious dishes at a few pounds extra. A starter of grilled goat's cheese on crostini, with a rich plum chutney, is light, sweet and a good size, while a salad packs in big chunks of butternut squash, feta, caramelised onions and puy lentils to make a very filling dish. Homemade burgers are splendidly thick and the veggie variety is spicy with a good, firm texture, accompanied by thick hand-cut chips, while a chicken supreme comes with a generous lake of piquant shallot jus. A promotional offer gives 20 per cent off the food bill if you can produce any theatre or gig ticket for that night, making it handy for those going on elsewhere, but be wary of timings as the casual vibe can extend to gaps between courses.

  • High point: Friendly, enthusiastic staff …
  • Low point: … can be too laid-back

Found the place by accident and have only good things to say about Lucky 7. Food, service and comfort have been excellent.
Have been back twice and will recommend to anyone.

4. Grant + Rona, Glasgow – 11 November 2011, 7:27pmLucky 7 CanteenReport

Visited Lucky 7 for lunch on two occasions. Unfortunately, we will not be back. Service is far too slow, and for a city centre establishment surrounded by businesses this is simply not good enough.

Surely with so much competition around they have to target getting people fed within 25 minutes of entering. It is lunch time and people only have limited time. As the menu only has a small number of options this should not be difficult.

We waited more than half an hour for fish & chips and a burger and may have been longer had we not had a word. There were plenty of staff hanging around not doing much and only a few tables were occupied. It was similar on our previous visit but we decided to give it another try due to convenience of location.

Overall, the food was good value and if you have time to kill there are worse places to visit. Surroundings are also very quirky and retro.

Have heard only good things about this place so decided to take a friend who was visiting Glasgow. It was very disappointing and I won't be returning.
Prosecco arrived warm with filthy glasses. These were sent back and it all arrived again this time with the bottle in an ice bucket. Burger arrived and my friend asked for mustard - "We've been waiting for a delivery of mustard for a week and a half" we were told. Really how clueless and careless do you have to be not to pop to the other side of the block and get some mustard if you are waiting for an unreliable supplier? Burger then turned out to be tough as a hockey puck and old as the hills. The salmon was ok and the peas were great but peas alone won't make me go back for rubbish food and reactionary service.

Ate here with a group of friends and was looking forward to it having read previous reviews. However, I was sadly disappointed. Our orders were slow in being taken and when the started arrived they were rather tasteless. I had chicken terrine which honestly I could not have identified if I were blindfolded and the onion chutney was watery tinned tomatoes. When asked how the dish was I said to the waiter sadly it was tasteless. Instead of an apology I was met with raised eyebrows and an "oh". Mains came later, a burger so dry my friend couldn't finish it and another friend who had the thai veg curry said it was the worst she had ever had. In short, I'd rather pay more elsewhere for tasty food and good service.
