Reviews of Burns' Statue (Dumbarton Road, Stirling)

1. Duncan Lunan, Glasgow – 22 April 2011, 8:28pm5 starsBurns' StatueReport

This statue was created in 1914 by my great-uncle Albert Hodge, a prominent member of the 'Glasgow Boys' who sadly died young. The statue and the figure of Burns on the plaque 'Thou Evening Star' are based on the Reynolds portrait, one of the few of Burns during his life. I inherited the plaster originals of the plaques 'Thou Evening Star' and 'The Cottar's Saturday Night' from my uncle, Gordon Lunan; they were restored by Colin McQueen and are now in Smith's Museum, Stirling, near the statue itself. Reproductions of them by Dalserf Heritage, Lanarkshire, are in Laurie's Bar, King Street, Glasgow, and what may be the original of the 'Tam O'Shanter' plaque is in the Tam O'Shanter Inn on Ayr High Street, on the site of a former museum. Whereabouts of the fourth original are unknown.
