We visited not long after it opened and at the time would have agreed with the first comment, unfortunately things seemed to have since gone downhill. First of all the portions are TINY (a cheeseboard at £6 was three little slivers of cheese, three oatcakes and a wee bunch of grapes!) and with a general lack of protein sources like beans or lentils it makes for a very unfulfilling experience. Plus unlike the first visit there was no complimentary bread to fill up with. Also if I'm being completely honest the standard of cuisine isn't that great. A new addition was also a 'discretionary' 10% service charge. Always a bit of a niggle.
The bill came to £65 for two (inc £14.50 for a bottle of cider) which I think represents pretty bad value for money when having to return home and raid the bread-bin in order to avoid passing out with hunger! It's such a shame as Edinburgh really does need another quality veggie restaurant to rival David Bann's but L'Artichaut isn't it!

Great food and good service but disagree with the above post: the portion sizes are far too small.

Well, well - what a fantastic addition to the vegetarian scene. Great friendly staff, fantastically quick service, beautiful surrounds - but it's the food that sets it apart. The beautiful guacamole on artichoke leaf that was the appetizer, delicious cucumber and beetroot with goats cheese starter with the complimentary bread and fantastic mushroom dish from the seasonal menu. Washed down with authentic French cider....mmmmm. The portions are good - bigger than I expected given usual upmarket restaurants. But I'd still order a side of rice or potatoes. It didn't work out too pricey which was great, less than £20 per head for a 2 course meal which included drinks and service.
