Occupying a bright, modern space, with a huge sunny window and regular displays of local artists’ work on the walls, Big Mouth Café is a popular spot for young families, relaxing shoppers and students. The menu is simple café fare, but prepared with care and pleasing attention to detail. A bowl of stovies, sausage and potatoes cooked down to a rich, meaty homeliness, is accompanied by honest, coarsely milled oatcakes. Sandwiches come in various guises, from ciabatta stuffed with steak and onions to toasted pitta bread with home-made hummus. The halloumi is especially good, grilled, salty cheese with artichoke hearts making a sandwich that is at once fresh and filling. A good selection of cakes is displayed behind the counter, caramel shortcake, brownies and mint slices sitting alongside home-made offerings like cheesecake and banoffee pie. Always lively, and with a generous BYOB policy, evenings can see the café play host to acoustic sessions, poker nights and book groups.
