Glasgow is lucky to have Chardon d’Or. There’s little point in describing a menu as it changes every couple of days when chef Brian Maule incorporates new dishes – one day it might be Arctic char with squid ink, the next, fillet of lamb. You just never know. Although a great ambassador for Scottish beef and game, there is always a full alternative menu for veggies. Dishes are French in style but not rich in delivery, each one light enough for the health-conscious. Servings are accompanied by a selection of silky, comforting, just-right vegetables such as fondant potatoes, fennel, chicory or asparagus so there’s no need for those price-hiking ‘sides’ – the axis of evil in modern dining. Wine-lovers will appreciate the fact that any wine on the list can be bought by the glass. All this would make Chardon d’Or a very special place but when you consider the fact that before 7pm you can have a three-course meal for £20.50 there is really no need to wait for a special occasion.
- High point: Quality ingredients, superb cooking
- Low point: Despite great deals, it is quite quiet during the day

We enjoyed a very civilised dinner. The atmosphere was sophisticated and the service good. One of us had the set meal which was good value the other ordered a la carte which was less so. The scallops and black pudding starter from the latter menu was the highlight of the meal. The other dishes were entirely acceptable, if not outstanding, and the wine list was on the expensive side. The total bill including service was over £60 per head and so we felt we paid fully for our experience.
