Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Cookie’s owners are passionate about food and source it in all kinds of cookie ways, even bartering with allotment owners to get ultra local produce. No two visits are the same as there’s always something new and interesting to eat or drink. This is no plush restaurant, rather an informal, laid-back café-bistro vibe pervades, heightened by the open kitchen – always an indication of proud, honest cooking. Blackboards display the ever-changing menu, but there’s always a pasta and a risotto available as a starter or main. Pasta a la norcina is beautifully cooked with cream, pecorino cheese, white wine, red onion, Italian sausage and just enough garlic. The pork belly starter was a tad dry, jostling for prominence with the mighty Stornoway black pudding, although the cider-soaked apricots added sweet overtones and helped bind it all together. Chicken supreme was perfectly moist, triumphantly accompanied by grilled polenta and wild mushrooms. If you like big meaty flavours, try the meltingly beautiful ox cheek bourguignon. For dessert, go for home-made meringues, and to drink, their own specially imported house red is recommended.

  • High point: Great fun with food
  • Low point: An experimental approach can go wrong occasionally

Delicious, well-sourced food, beautiful surroundings and friendly, accommodating service. If it was this latter point - the service - that put you off, rest assured that this has now been resolved.

Cookie is easily our preferred option for dining with friends and family, or just for a quiet week-night dinner.

And, while the wine is excellent, DisEgg has a point - West Brewery beers on tap!

Just in from Cookie, superb! We enjoyed the night so much we thought we would share it! It's so unpretentious, while still being really cool! The place was packed and everyone seemed to be having a great time. The food was...outstanding. When I was deciding on my food I kept checking out what everyone else was being delivered and it took me an age to decide. I settled for the pork and it was to die for. I loved the atmosphere and the staff were really engaging.

The art displayed was fantastic, but that's my business. I was really impressed with the area downstairs, how often do you get a sneaky look into the runnings of a place? The only down-side was I had to leave and come home but I've had a great night and am already planning what friends I cna introduce to the Cookie experience. I can't recommend it highly enough for a really fantastic night out.

Quite disapointing. It took an hour for our 2 main courses (chicken breast with mashed potato and a tomato pasta dish) to arrive. While the food was fairly well cooked it was not worth the price or the wait. Certainly not somewhere we will be going back to.

Couldn't disagree more with the original reviewer.

The service we received was attentive but not intrusive. Food arrived in good time and we were given olives while waiting. Both meals were great in terms of cooking, taste and portions. The atmosphere was relaxed and the artwork interesting. We even had time for some delicious rhubarb flan and coffee.

I'm genuinely glad that Cookie exists as an alternative to what's currently available in this area and finally; West beer on the Southside (there's a great selection of wines as well).

Interior is really nice, food is lovely and comes in generous, hearty portions that whilst not cheap are absolutely reasonably priced.
However, there is a clear difference between laid back service and just plain bad service. Staff are clearly not trained at all, it takes an age to get a menu, another age to be served and an eon to receive your order. this was not just our own experience, lots of tables around us were beginning to look very unhappy indeed and the final insult is when there is no time for pudding because 2 hours have now passed and they've promised your (pre-booked) table to other people: at one table we saw the waiter stand over diners forcing them to finish their just arrived coffees immediately as there were people waiting a few feet away for the table! Sort this out, it's just rude.
