This review is taken from the current (2011) edition.
The Playwright has labelled itself 'uniquely intimate', which cannot be argued with. Offering some of the most inventive fine-dining food in Dundee, with a price list to match, The Playwright is ambitious in its endeavours. It succeeds, although the grazing menu is recommended if you are on a budget as are the favourably-priced lunch and pre-theatre set menus. More than 100 wines and champagnes are available by the bottle – the broadest selection of any eatery in Dundee – while an edited lineup of four reds and four whites are available in small, medium and large-measure glasses. Wine dinners are frequently held at the restaurant, providing patrons with the opportunity to learn more about specific winemakers and wine-growing regions while sampling food conceived especially to match the occasion. These events generally take place every 6-8 weeks and are advertised in advance on the premises.
