Loch Fyne Newhaven
Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

While not quite the original, Edinburgh's branch of the Loch Fyne Restaurant does enjoy its own prime location at Newhaven Harbour with pleasant views over the Forth. The building may have the depth and height of an air hanger, but the floor-to-ceiling windows and pale wood fixtures and flooring give the place a lovely bright atmosphere, while the open kitchen offers a welcome view of the chefs at work. Many of the raw ingredients here are accredited by the Marine Conservation Society. Inevitably, shellfish options are a particular highlight and these range from simple servings of oysters to deluxe platters of mussels, clams, langoustines, crayfish and squid. A starter of lobster bisque is rich in flavour without being overwhelmingly seasoned while the main course seafood selection is a generous stack of grilled salmon, sea bass and king prawn with seared scallops enlivened by a lemon parsley butter. Only the old-fashioned fish and chips disappoints, with the haddock overdone and smothered in a rather salty batter, but this is the only significant complaint in an otherwise enjoyable experience.

  • High point: Wonderful shellfish to be enjoyed in a lovely location
  • Low point: The overcooked haddock

Wouldn't recommend this place. Have been here twice, first time was ok, although service was very slow (both times) - had to work hard to get any help including waiting to pay the bill. However, the food was ok the first time. Recently returned as my partner really likes shellfish / seafood platters. We were told that we got the last platter. My partner happened to see that before they brought our platter there was a discussion about it involving our waitress, two chefs and the manager. One of them left and returned with a crab which had been missing from the platter. Once the food arrived, first of all the hot parts of the platter were not hot since they'd been sitting out. Secondly, the crab was not good, looked and tasted past it's best; we could see why they hadn't wanted to serve it. The worst part was that the manager brought our platter and didn't say anything about the problem, just trying to cover it up. I was not happy so ordered a different main course for myself which to be fair they gave us for free. However, for £110 I expect more and I expect honesty.

Wonderfull night out with friends. We booked for a Friday night and even the weather was pleased to see us! The sun streamed through the glass windows as we listened to the Jazz music playing and had a great meal and experience great service. Everyone there is so chatty, friendly and obviously really enjoys their jobs and this makes all the difference! Well done we will be back the lobster platter is to die for......

I decided to take my girlfriend for a valentines evening meal. Although i know she is not mad about fish, i had heard so many good things about Loch Fyne that, after checking the menu, i was sure she would be able to have something, and hopefully enjoy it. It is also near where we stay and as she was working on Sunday, this was a bonus. i went online the week before and and showed her the 'set' menu and she was especially pleased to see the Dark Chocolate Pudding with Chocolate Ice Cream as a dessert option!! Anyway, it is a very nice restaurant, we had good seating and the atmosphere is laid back and private. We both had a steak for main course and were asked if we would like Mashed Potatoes, Vegetables, or Boiled Potatoes to accompany the steak. We both thought that was a little odd, but asked for the mash. We also tried to order our sweet but were told politely that this order would be taken later. Overall the food was good but just didn't go the extra mile. You get the impression that they are trying to get every penny they can and cut back on the customer where possible. The steak's were accompanied by a bowl of mash, which was both uninspiring and pretty large in proportion. Half of the portion would have been ample and then maybe we could have had half the vegetable serving each? When we came to order sweet we were told that the chocolate pudding was finished. Was it ever on in the first place? i am not convinced. i certainly never saw anyone have it and heard a lot of people being told that they couldn't have it!!! It took us 15 minutes to try to attract someone's attention so we could pay the bill. i am sure i wouldn't want to ask someone to pay £78 for the same meal we had, so no real surprise in the reluctance to find a volunteer! Overall it was a strange experience. i wouldn't recommend it to anyone based on this visit. It is hard to pin point the main reason for the problem, but certainly i have had much better meals, much better service in much better surroundings for a lot less money. Also, i don't think it is forgivable to put on a set menu, advertise it online 1 month before the given date and run out of portions. Especially in a restaurant that only has a maximum of 96 covers....... and on Valentines day????........ Shocking!!
