Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.

Eteaket has a target market and lads, you’re not it. From the pop-vintage hot pink chairs to the powder blue tea menus, this tea boutique is best for tête-à-têtes over a cuppa and cake. The extensive drinks menu is full of pretty things to drink, from the surprisingly enjoyable chocolate abyss (yes, that’s chocolate and black tea in the same cup) to heady chai tea lattes, or artisan roast coffee served in mismatched floral china. A varied afternoon tea of cute mini patisseries, sarnies and great big scones with Devonshire clotted cream comes laid out on vintage cake-stands, or for lunch the ham, Lockerbie cheddar and bramley apple chutney panini is a hit. Less successfully, chicken salad is choked with mayonnaise, and the great things promised by carrot and chocolate cakes are marred by hints of staleness. Well-intentioned service is sometimes overwhelmed by peak time popularity, but it remains a charming spot.

  • High point: Well thought out and beautifully served range of teas
  • Low point: Style over substance when it comes to some of the food

I really like this place, it's a little bit quirky and it has a nice relaxing feel to it.

There's only one problem - price.

I mean, £ 6.50 for a toasted ciabatta. Are you kidding me?

I'd really like to eat something with my coffee, but there's no way on earth I'm paying that.

I stumbled across these reviews for Eteaket while looking for stuff to do in Edinburgh this bank holiday weekend and felt compelled to respond (which I don't normally do). I work in town and pop into Eteaket regularly and, imho, the above posts do not reflect the experience I have had every time I go in. The staff are friendly and approachable, the tea selection is huge and I, and my wife and friends, all love the cakes, scones and food. I honestly have to say that it is reasonably priced too. I can't speak for others experiences but I am a regular and the place is very often packed out which seems to speak for itself.

Eteaket do have a good selection of tea, but that's where it ends. The food leaves a lot to be desired and the cakes were dry (apart from the scones). Grossly over priced for quality, wouldn't return with so many other cafes to choose from in town.

Terrible service received on both times I've been in here (gave them benift of the doubt and returned). Tea choice was good, but no advice from the staff on blends, or ability to smell them. The tea I received was nice though. The cupcake supplier should be sacked as cake was dry as can be and the sandwiches were served on slightly stale bread. The furniture may be pink and blue, but that's where the tea room factor ends and the pictures on the wall are not exactly fitting for a town establishment trying to be uber cool. Far better tea places in town than here. Seems trip advisor agrees with me.

A beautiful cafe with lovely touches such as traditional china cups and cakestands. The tea was delicious and clearly of a high quality; the food however left a lot to be desired. My friend and I ordered afternoon tea with much anticipation but soon wished we hadnt bothered. The sandwiches were very small and dry and the clotted cream meant for the scones was somewhat sour. All the cakes were pretty tired and it seemed they had been sitting out exposed to the air. All in all we had expected such a pretty place to offer better quality food.

very pretty place, lovely tea, nice cake, but goodness me, the service was awful. went in on a wednesday afternoon and had to wait ages at the counter to place my order while staff ran around chaotically, then another ten minutes before someone could bring me my one solitary cappuccino. sandwiches looked ok, some cakes looked lovely, the others a little bit tired, but there are so many better places where service is snappy and efficient, which is what you need when you're grabbing a coffee and cake.
