A firm fixture on Edinburgh’s foodie scene Falko continues to deliver goods be it rye breads, pastries or some of the finest, traditional cakes outside of central Europe. Produced to strict standards, no raising agents are used in the cakes, only beaten egg whites and the Black Forest gateau includes a minimum of 10% Kirsch in its whipped cream. If you can find a table (by no means guaranteed) then there are also options such as ham and cheese platters available from a short but well executed menu. The small space manages to feel neither cramped nor cluttered due to its crisp, clean interior with little quirks such as the antique bicycle and army helmet preventing it from feeling sterile.
- High point: Unmissable cakes
- Low point: Tables fill up quickly, especially at weekends
Listed in The Larder – in the shops now or buy online.
German-born Falko Burkert took Edinburgh's Farmers' Market by storm in 2005 – a shop in Bruntsfield opened soon afterwards, followed by one in Gullane. The former, reminiscent of a Viennese grand café, lures you in with its classy décor and indulgent aromas – Hansel and Gretel beware! Falko is a Konditormeister, a master-confectioner with nine years' training that has imbued him with both Teutonic precision and artistic flair – little wonder he won 2007 UK Patisserie of the Year.

I spend far too much time at Falko's in Bruntsfield. Not only is their coffee the best In Edinburgh but the pastries and cakes are second to none. I have always found the staff extremely welcoming and helpful and really don't recognise the staff that Roseviolet is talking about. As far as I'm concerned the menu is extremely good value for money. I went for Brunch last Sunday and had Bircher muesli, Smoked salmon on sourdough with poached eggs and a dill hollandaise sauce - all freshly prepared and absolutely delicious, coffee or tea and orange juice are included in the price of £9.30. The only problem that I have is that I might have to spend even more time there!

I give Falko full marks for his baking, I've been a fan since he had his smaller shop a few years ago.
I have to say that I can concur with Roseviolet's experience of very hostile staff in early 2009, as we had a similar experience in March 2009. Things are back to normal now (the rude staff members have not been spotted during recent visits) though and well worth a visit.
And the quality of the cakes - up there with the best coffee houses in Vienna!

There really are not enough superlatives to adequately describe Falko's cakes and breads. Clearly a lot of time and care goes into the food and it is no surprise that Falko has a large and loyal following of customers.
It is surprising that Roseviolet found the staff in the café to be unwelcoming as this is a million miles from our experiences there. We’ve always found the staff to be polite, friendly and accommodating, going out of their way to make us feel welcome. This is one of the reasons we return so frequently, bu primarily it’s because of the fantastic cakes.
Fantastisch!

I also can't believe someone had such a bad experience. We don't have kids but there are always plenty of families eating in and taking away so always seemed child friendly to me. And the food is amazing!! The sandwich platters are fresh, delicious, very filling, beautifully presented and extremely good value for money! We usually sit down for sandwich and cakes and then take home a few loaves of bread as well. The multigrain is my fave.

Can't quite believe Roseviolet visited the Falko's I know and love. Yes - I'm one of the buggy brigade and along with other BBBs, this cafe is a favourite and we often enjoy coffee, sandwiches and cakes there - and oooh what cakes. Maybe this person did something to upset the staff? Perhaps, although her 'wee one' was behaving impeccably, its parents weren't? I don't know, but what I do know is that I've always found everyone who works at Falko's polite and kind and considerate. There's no way that a large section of the customer base has been alienated. We love going there and always feel welcome. And is it polite to listen into other people's conversations? Hmmm. I'm not convinced this sort of gossip merits a response. But see for yourselves. Go early in teh day though, because the cakes are made fresh everyday and once they're gone, they're gone!

After looking forward to visiting the Falko cafe in Bruntsfield for ages because of the gorgeous looking pastries and breads, we were exceptionally disappointed when we did finally go. We visited with our two-year-old and were made to feel very unwelcome indeed. Perfectly acceptable to not cater to kids 100%, not asking for a Lucas-style experience in such surroundings (sometimes it's nice to go somewhere more 'adult' for a change!), but the waiting staff were rude verging on hostile and the whole experience was just horrible. We actually left without eating in the end, because of the frostiness - and our wee one was behaving impeccably. Strange, given that the area is packed with the buggy-brigade, and the cafe is next door to a kid's toy shop AND a kid's book shop, to be alienating such a large sector of its potential customer base. Also overheard a customer complaining about her soup, so maybe even the food 'aint that hot. I did write an email complaining, about 3 weeks ago, but am yet to receive a reply. Hey ho. At least 99.9% of eateries in Edinburgh are happy to cater to kids, available high chairs or not.
