To call Mhor Fish a chippie is like saying that U2 have released the odd song. It may have a fantastic chippie on site, but this seafood oasis right in the heart of the hill shrouded Trossachs town of Callander has much more to offer. With the family behind the nearby legendary Monachyle Mhor hotel and restaurant at the helm the fish counter and the restaurant could not really go wrong. Sourcing is key with the fish and crustacean delights heaped up in the window tempting in shoppers and diners alike. Simply choose what you want from the bountiful array of oysters, langoustines, monkfish et al and have them grill, bake, sear or, yes, fry for you. The simple dining space is no setting for a romantic rendezvous, but it also sports an a la carte menu and serves crisp white wines to go with the fishy delights. You could just visit their chippie next door; even there the batter is laced with sparkling water and then cooked in proper beef dripping. If only all ‘chippies’ were like this.

The enlightened face of fish and chips, this trendy little fish café doubles up as a fishmonger, with a counter piled high with oysters, mussels, prawns and other fish delivered fresh from the north coast of Scotland. Expect sustainable pollock or coley rather than cod or haddock, with even the takeaway adopting a progressive attitude to taste and quality with chips cooked in beef dripping and fish available grilled rather than battered. Mhor FishReport -
This may well have been the worst, most expensive fish 'restaurant' I have ever been to! I started with the shellfish bisque, which was too salty and spicy. The accompanying 'home made toast' was burnt at the crusts and greasy. Then fillet of trout with soused vegetables and chips. The fish was overcooked and dry, the vegetables soaked in vinegar and not one of the chips was over one inch long! I could not eat the vegetables at all! I gave them a chance to redeem themselves with a dessert, but the 'fruit crumble with topping of seeds' was too sharp, watery and contained no 'crumble topping' The 'real custard' served with it, came in a tiny pot not much larger than a thimble. My Diet Coke was served in a can with no ice or lemon in the accompanying glass. My friend just had the fish and chips and found his fish portion very small and the chips similarly tiny. The total bill of £65 was ridiculous considering that I couldn't eat hardly any of the food. No doubt the fish was freshly caught, but it was just cooked to death.
