The 2012 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
This review is taken from the current (2012) edition.
In its few short years on earth, the Manna House has become an institution beloved of ladies from Morningside, builders on their way to a job and all walks of life in between. A first-class bakery and patisserie, it’s also branched out of late into full meals, with slices of Serrano ham, spinach and cheddar quiche and kale, red onion and ginger frittata sitting alongside chorizo meatballs in spicy tomato sauce, pizza slices and a counter of rich salads. Yet that cabinet of dazzling and delicately designed, cakes tarts and chocolate creations is still the main selling point, alongside shelves of cheap, home-baked loaves of fresh bread.
- High point: Prices as low as the quality is high
- Low point: Not a lot of seating space
Listed in The Larder – in the shops now or buy online.
Known for its bread (made using Scottish ingredients where possible and without flour improvers, preservatives or other undesirables), the Manna House is a local bakery found at the top of Easter Road. Everything is made fresh on the premises – from savoury and sweet pastries to cakes, and soups, salads and tarts. Often easier to take away because of its diminutive size, but plans to expand this year mean there will soon be more space to eat in.

This place just gets better and better - they are now open SUNDAYS!
Not only have they got their usual full range of bread, pastries and cakes but they've a super wee brunch menu too - every week 10am till 4pm.

The food is average at best and the coffee is rubbish. The customer service is incompetent and negative. The older woman who seems to manage this place is leading by her own poor example. Just sick of dealing with the screw ups and low quality that this place seems to insist on.

Cakes, pastries, tarts, bread & soup are all tremendous. It is a priviledge to call this my local bakery. However, the sandwiches are a little uninspiring though & painfully slow to make - you actually feel the hatred of the queue that inevitably bulids up behind you if you order one to take away. Coffee isn't great either (not bad, but not great). So while it is a fantastic bakery, it wouldn't be top of my list of Edinbrugh cafes.

Stick with Greggs suzisue. Manna House quality is wasted on you.

If I could fall into a barrel of cakes and eat them all, they would be from this shop. The service is friendly, the cakes are AMAZING and the bread is fantastic. Not many tables so dont bet on getting a seat at busy times, but well worth a visit for a takeaway at the very least!
